About earthquakes.co.uk

earthquakes.co.uk is an independent earthquake information website focused on the United Kingdom, with worldwide coverage. Our goal is simple: when the ground shakes — whether in Shropshire or Shizuoka — you can find out what happened, quickly and clearly.

Where our data comes from

We do not measure earthquakes ourselves. All seismic data on this site is sourced automatically from two of the world's most respected scientific institutions:

The British Geological Survey (BGS), which operates the UK national seismograph network and publishes details of earthquakes in and around the British Isles. Contains British Geological Survey materials © UKRI.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which publishes real-time data on earthquakes worldwide. USGS data is in the public domain.

Our systems check both sources every 15 minutes, around the clock. News headlines are aggregated from third-party publishers via Google News and always link to the original source.

What this site is — and is not

This site is an information and reference service. It is not an emergency alert system, a warning service, or a source of official safety guidance. Data is provided by third parties and may be delayed, revised, or occasionally incorrect. In any emergency, follow the guidance of your local authorities and emergency services.

How the site is funded

The site may display advertising and may contain affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy something through a link on this site, at no extra cost to you. This never affects the earthquake data we display.
